The AI visibility checklist

Is your brand ready for AI search? Work through these checks to make your business easier to understand, find and verify, and to measure the result.

There is no switch that makes a business appear in AI answers. What you can do is make your brand easy to understand, easy to find and easy to verify, and then measure what happens. This checklist covers 12 practical checks across four areas. Tick them off as you go; your progress is saved in this browser only.

Foundations

  • AI systems need to understand what your business is before they can recommend it. Ambiguous names, vague descriptions or multiple competing descriptions make that harder.

How to check: Search for your brand name in an AI assistant and ask “what is [brand]?” Is the answer accurate? Does your homepage state plainly who you are, what you do and who you serve?

  • An About page, leadership or founder information, contact details and a clear history give both people and machines reasons to trust your business.

How to check: Can a stranger confirm from your site who runs the business, where it operates and how to reach it?

  • Conflicting names, addresses, hours or descriptions across the web create uncertainty about which version is correct.

How to check: Compare your website with your Google Business Profile, major directories and social profiles. Fix mismatches at the source.

Your site

  • Pages that can't be crawled can't be found, cited or summarized. Blocked sections, broken links and content hidden behind scripts all reduce discoverability.

How to check: Check robots.txt, confirm you have an XML sitemap, and make sure important pages are reachable through normal links.

  • A page about “Solutions” says little. A page about “bookkeeping for freelance photographers” says exactly when it's relevant.

How to check: Do your main service or product pages each have a clear, specific topic, a descriptive title and a heading that states it?

  • Many AI answers draw on content that is already discoverable through search, so traditional SEO fundamentals still matter.

How to check: Review Google Search Console for indexing issues and see which queries you already appear for.

Content

  • Original explanations, data, examples and perspectives give AI systems and the sites they cite something worth referencing.

How to check: Is there anything on your site a customer couldn't find on every competitor's site?

  • Covering a topic thoroughly, including the questions around it, makes it clearer what your business is an authority on.

How to check: List the questions customers ask before buying. How many does your site answer well?

Measurement

  • AI answers often reduce a market to a few names. Knowing which competitors appear, and where, shows what you're being compared against.

How to check: For your most important questions, do you know which competitors are named and how often?

  • Your visibility only means something relative to the questions people ask. A defined, stable set of prompts makes measurement possible.

How to check: Do you have a written list of prompts you check across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI features?

  • The domains AI answers cite reveal which sources shape how your market is described.

How to check: Do you know which sites are cited when your category comes up, and whether your business is represented accurately on them?

  • Single checks are snapshots. Regular measurement shows whether changes you make are having any effect.

How to check: Are you recording results on a schedule, with history you can compare against?

How to use this checklist

Work top to bottom. The foundations and site checks remove obstacles: if AI systems and search engines can't clearly identify and read your business, nothing else matters much. The content checks give them reasons to reference you. The measurement checks tell you whether any of it is working.

None of these items guarantees that an AI assistant will mention your business. AI systems are built and updated by their providers, and their answers depend on many factors. What the checklist does is remove avoidable reasons to be overlooked and make your progress visible.

Monitoring the measurement items

The last four checks are about ongoing observation, and that's where a dedicated tool earns its place. Nightwatch can be used to monitor many of the measurement-oriented items on this list. It tracks your chosen prompts across AI platforms, records competitors and cited domains, tracks sentiment, and keeps history alongside your traditional search rankings.
